Volleyball Captains Earn Academic Honors


Greene, Underwood Named To All-District Team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina seniors Laura Greene and Malaika Underwood have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District 3 University Division Volleyball Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Underwood, named to the first team, and Greene, named to the second team, are the captains of the 2002 Tar Heel volleyball team.

Underwood, a 5-9 outside hitter from San Diego, Calif., averages 2.32 kills and 2.90 digs per game this season and has recorded eight double-doubles for the No. 12 ranked, 26-2 Tar Heels. She is currently ranked ninth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in digs per game. Underwood recorded her 1,000th career dig Oct. 27 and now has 1,054 for her career. She is an international studies major with a 3.80 g.p.a.

Greene, a 5-11 outside hitter from Yadkinville, N.C., ranks second in the ACC with 3.77 digs per game and third with 4.20 kills per game. An All-ACC first team selection as a junior, she has twice been named ACC Player of the Week this season. She holds the Carolina career record with 1,426 digs and has 1,531 kills during her career. In the team's 28 matches this season, Greene has recorded double-doubles on 20 occasions. She is a psychology major with a 3.45 g.p.a.

These senior captains have led the Tar Heels to a 26-2 (13-1) record and a national ranking for 11 consecutive weeks. The team is currently 12th in the USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches Poll and was as high as 11th, the highest ever ranking for an ACC school.

In their four years at Carolina, the team has had a 104-25 record (.806) and has won three straight conference championships.
