DURHAM, N.C.-The No. 12 Tar Heels improved to 11-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 24-2 overall with a 3-0 win over Duke (21-7, 9-4) in Cameron Indoor Stadium Friday night. The 30-20, 30-23, 30-28 win gives North Carolina a 7.5-5.5 advantage in the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between the schools.
Senior outside hitter Laura Greene led the Tar Heels with 21 digs and 16 kills, including hitting seven of eight attempts in the first game with no errors for a school single-game record .875 hitting percentage.
Carolina held on in a defensive match that included 80 digs by the Tar Heels and 73 by Duke as well as a combined hitting percentage of .131 by both teams.
Sophomore defensive specialist Caroline deRoeck recorded 15 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Molly Pyles had 16 kills for UNC including nine in the third game.
The first game of the match was a back and forth battle, with Duke holding on to a 14-13 run before Carolina would surge ahead. A kill by senior outside hitter Malaika Underwood would start a 5-0 Tar Heel run that she would also cap with a service ace. Down the stretch, it was Greene who starred for Carolina, with four kills including the game-winner.
In the second game, the Tar Heels trailed 6-9 before Greene began a 12-2 run that included seven kills and a block by the senior co-captain. Up 18-11, Pyles added four kills down the stretch with Carolina taking a 2-0 lead with a 30-23 win.
After taking a 2-1 lead in the final game, Carolina would trail until a block by senior middle hitter Holly Strauss and Underwood gave UNC a 28-27 advantage. From the left side, Pyles put down a pair of kills for the final two points to seal the game and match.
The Tar Heels are next in action tomorrow night as they travel to Wake Forest, taking on the Demon Deacons at 7 p.m.
