TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State volleyball team entered Sunday's match against 11th-ranked North Carolina with an 11-0 record at home. The Seminoles would not allow that record to become tarnished on this October afternoon, as they defeated the Tar Heels by a score of 3-2 (26-30, 26-30, 30-27, 30-22, 15-6). The loss for North Carolina was only their second defeat of the season and first loss in the ACC. With the victory, the Tribe improves to 16-7 overall, 7-3 in the ACC, while North Carolina falls to 21-2 on the season, 8-1 in the conference.
"This win today proves that we can play with anyone in the country," said head coach Todd Kress. "When we were down, with our backs against the wall, we came out and fought back to win. That's why this was a big win for this program."
The Seminoles were led by sophomore middle hitter Aisha Carr. Carr had 17 kills, two solo blocks, five block assists and hit .533 for Florida State. Senior outside hitter Alex Sevillano performed well for the Tribe, as she notched 17 kills, two service aces, six digs, two block assists and hit .293 against the Tar Heels. Sevillano made history, as she recorded her 1,000th-career kill at Florida State, took sole possession of seventh place among FSU's all-time career ace leaders and moved into 10th-place among individual-season ace leaders. Senior opposite Kristin Frye was a force for the Seminoles as she recorded a double double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Frye also contributed with four block assists and a hitting percentage of .238. Erica Bunch punched in 16 kills to help lead the Seminoles to victory. Jennifer Anderson passed Marie Sanders and broke into the top 10 among FSU's individual season leaders, as she recorded 64 assists against North Carolina.
North Carolina was led by senior outside hitter Laura Greene, as she recorded 21 kills, 16 digs, three service aces, one block assist and a hitting percentage of .311. Junior middle hitter Aletha Green was a force for the Tar Heels as she notched 13 kills on 24 attacks with two errors for a hitting percentage of .458. Green also contributed with four block assists. Senior setter Eve Rackham had five kills, 55 assists, four digs, one service ace and hit .400 for the Tar Heels.
Florida State will return to action Tuesday, October 29th, when the Seminoles travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on the Bulls of the University of South Florida. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
