Chapel Hill, N.C.-No. 18 North Carolina topped Georgetown 3-1 in Carmichael Auditorium. Senior co-captain Laura Greene led the Tar Heels with her ninth double-double of the season.
Lauren Warner had a match-high 28 kills and 17 digs, but it was not enough for the Hoyas who fall to 2-11 all-time vs. the Tar Heels.
Game 1 was started evenly, with the Tar Heels (10-1) taking a 13-9 lead, before Georgetown (7-4) battled back to within one at 13-12. From there, the Tar Heels went on a 17-5 run, eventually closing out the game on a block by Molly Pyles and Eve Rackham for a 30-17 win. Greene led Carolina with six kills, with Pyles added five kills for the Heels.
The second game of the match featured back and forth action, as the Hoyas hung with the Tar Heels. Neither team could build a lead of more than four points, but in the end Carolina outlasted the visitors 30-26. The game was tied 25-25, but a service error by Georgetown gave the Tar Heels a 26-25 edge. Greene put together back-to-back points for the Tar Heels with her fourth kill of the game with only service ace of the night to give Carolina a 28-25 lead. The team put the game away on kills by Malaika Underwood and Katie Wright.
Georgetown took the third game from the Tar Heels 30-25. This was only the second game in five matches that Carolina has lost at home this season. North Carolina came out to a 1-0 lead, but Georgetown took over from there - not giving the Tar Heels another lead in the game. Warner led the Hoyas with nine kills and eight digs.
In the fourth game, Carolina came back to win 30-28 after another back and forth battle. The game was tied at 9-9, 10-10, 12-12. 14-14, and 17-17 before the Hoyas began to pull away with a 7-3 run and a 24-20 lead. Carolina hung in, and after trailing 25-28, came back with five consecutive points to clinch the match. Greene recorded the tying, go-ahead and clinching points with three consecutive kills.
UNC is next in action Saturday night at 7 vs. the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers.
