CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The No. 14 North Carolina volleyball team has been selected to host first and second round matches this Thursday and Friday in the 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament for the second straight season. The tournament brackets were announced Sunday night on ESPNEWS.
Carolina (30-3) will face Winthrop (28-10) 30 minutes after the end of the first match this Thursday in Carmichael Auditorium. The other first round match with be at 5 p.m. and will pit American (26-7) vs. South Carolina (21-6). The second round match will be Friday at 7 p.m.
"We are delighted to be hosting and getting such a high seed at 11th ," said 13th-year head coach Joe Sagula, who will be taking his team to the tournament for the fifth-consecutive year. "We have some tough matches ahead of us, but this team deserves to be playing at home in front of the fans in Chapel Hill after having success all season."
Last season the Tar Heels hosted NCAA Tournament action for the first time, topping South Carolina 3-1 in the first round before falling to Pepperdine (0-3) the following day. The team has a 2-7 all time record in the tournament, with the other win coming in 1998 over Oral Roberts. Both of the Tar Heel's second round losses have come to Pepperdine. Carolina has a 2-2 record all-time vs. Winthrop, but the teams have not met since 1977.
The team's 2002 season has highlighted by the team's first Atlantic Coast Conference Regular Season Championship since 1998 and also the highest ever ranking by an ACC school in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll at No. 11.
All session passes are available prior to the event date by calling the North Carolina Ticket Office at 919-962-2296. Adult passes are $10, students and seniors are $6 and children are $4. Tickets at the door are $7 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children. One ticket gains admission to both matches on Thursday. The doors to Carmichael Auditorium will open at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
