SAN DIEGO, Calif.-With a 3-1 victory over Northwestern this Saturday, the No. 23 North Carolina volleyball team is off to its best start under 13th year head coach Joe Sagula at 5-0. The team was last 5-0 to open a season in 1989.
The Tar Heels topped Northwestern 30-28, 30-28, 28-30, 30-22 behind three players with double-digit kills in the second game of the University of San Diego Classic.
Seniors Malaika Underwood and Laura Greene, and sophomore Molly Pyles each were in double-figures and kills. Underwood recorded 13 kills and 12 digs while hitting .321 in front of her hometown crowd. Greene recorded 16 kills to go along with 10 digs, and Pyles knocked home 11 kills for the Tar Heels.
Senior setter Eve Rackham had 49 assist to go along with a team-high 19 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Caroline deRoeck also recorded double-digits with 12 digs.
Carolina plays again tonight at 10 p.m. (ET) vs. the host San Diego Toreros.
