Pyles Leads UNC with a Double-double as All 15 Tar Heels See Action

The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated the St. John's Red Storm 3-0 on Saturday morning in Carmichael Auditorium.

In the first game the Tar Heels came out of the gate fast with a 10-2 lead eventually stretching it to 30-10 for the victory. UNC played without an attacking error as Malaika Underwood and Molly Pyles each picked up four kills each.

The second game saw the career debuts of freshman setter McKenzie Byrd and red-shirt freshman Camilla Ihenetu. After St. John's came within one point at 13-12, the Tar Heels took control of the match for a 30-19 victory. Ihenetu picked up her first career kill and finished the game leading the team along with Pyles with 4 kills each. Byrd also had career milestones in her first collegiate kill and assist.

In the third game - a 30-20 victory for UNC - freshman Dani Nyenhuis picked up her first collegiate kill and would finish the match with a total of five.

The match leaders for the Tar Heels were Pyles with 13 kills and 14 digs, matching a career high for kills. Senior Eve Rackham and Byrd combined for 39 assists. Ihenetu finished second on the team with seven kills. UNC had the statistical edge as well, hitting .444 for the match while St. John's hit .091.

Sophomore Jayme Mitchell had a career high with seven digs, and Pyles had a career high four service aces.

The Tar Heels continue with Carolina/Nike Classic tonight at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium against the Wisconsin Badgers (1-0).
