Tar Heels Beat Yellow Jackets in Five Games

ATLANTA - No. 11 North Carolina played its second five-game match of the week, but hung on to top No. 23 Georgia Tech 3-2. The Tar Heels won 30-28, 15-30, 24-30, 30-23, 17-15 to improve to 15-1 overall, matching the team's best start ever when the 1981 team was also 15-1.

Senior outside hitter Laura Greene recored 13 digs to set a new North Carolina record for career digs with 1,261. The previous recored was held by Katie Galloway (1991-1994) with 1,258. Greene recored a double-double on the night with 17 kills as well.

Sophomore outside hitter Molly Pyles led the Tar Heels with a career-high 18 kills and 17 digs. Senior setter Eve Rackham had 62 assists in the win.

Sophomore defensive specialist Caroline deRoeck also had double-digit digs with 15, while junior middle Aletha Green had 11 kills, senior middle Holly Strauss had 10 kills and senior outside Malaika Underwood added 14 kills.

Georgia Tech's Lynnette Moster recored 18 kills with a .536 hitting percentage and Alexandra Preiss had 19 kills and a .432 hitting percentage for the Yellow Jackets as well.

Carolina is now 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team will face Duke on Oct. 10 and Wake Forest on Oct. 11 in Carmichael Auditorium. Head coach Joe Sagula, now on his 99th ACC win, will be looking for conference win No. 100 of his career vs. Duke.
